We started our journey more than three years ago when a mutual friend introduced me to Juli McGowan Boit, a nurse practitioner in Kenya who was preparing to launch the Living Room hospice. We met over coffee and talked about her plans for the hospice. I was truly amazed and moved by her work and her mission to provide comfort for those living with life-threatening illnesses and to give everyone – regardless of their economic situation – the ability to die with dignity.
After meeting with Juli, I knew that this was a story that I needed to tell.Over the past three years, we have worked relentlessly to make this project happen.  Our efforts culminated early this year when we began production. During our 16 days filming in Kenya, we enjoyed unprecedented access to HIV clinics and hospitals.  We engaged in-depth conversations with physicians whose primary focus is on relieving and preventing patients’ suffering, an area of healthcare referred to as Palliative care.  In addition to being exposed to the harsh realities of healthcare familiar to the people of Kenya, we were also brought in to the intimate operations of the Living Room.  The staff and the guests we profiled, generously opened up their lives to the camera inviting the audience into a profoundly unique experience.  From this, viewers will share in the most intimate of moments, those that transpire for a person confronting the deepest challenges of life.

This project has truly changed my life, and I think those who watch it will be equally affected. Our mission — to give a voice and name to a statistic by effectively telling the stories of Maggie, James, Jacob and Barnabas.

We recently wrapped post-production and are submitting the documentary to film festivals. Any amount you can donate will be used towards festival fees and will allow us share the stories of Maggie, James, Jacob and Barnabas with the world.
