The Space Between is a human story about hope and perseverance. The documentary examines the impact of poverty on healthcare in Kenya through the scope of dying with dignity at the Living Room hospice. Kenya is one of the poorest nations in the world, with nearly half of the country living under the poverty line on less than one dollar a day. Most can’t afford medical treatment, or the funds to travel to a hospital, so they die alone and in pain. For those who can enter the public hospitals, a painful existence can await them as well: understaffed hospitals with minimal resources and multiple patients sharing a bed. Additionally, most hospitals do not offer palliative care, an area of healthcare that focuses on relieving and preventing patients’ suffering. The Space Between provides viewers with a “fly on the wall” approach, providing unprecedented access into Kenya’s public hospitals and hospice care centers through the stories of four individuals with life-threatening diseases and conditions.
